Benazir Income Support Programme is the first ever comprehensive and transparent social safety net programme initiated by the Government of Pakistan. It is one of the major instruments of Government of Pakistan to achieve the targets, set by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The concept of BISP is derived from the broadly acknowledged developmental theories of social protection, widely implemented in developing as well as developed world.
The success of BISP in all the spectrums is actually materialization of the vision of Government of Pakistan. Since its inception, BISP has made tremendous progress in targeting the poor segment of the society. Currently BISP is serving over 5 million beneficiaries across Pakistan. It has successfully disbursed over Rs. 412 billion to poorest families in the country. Over the last two years, annual disbursement has been increased from Rs. 65.1 billion in 2013-14 to Rs. 96.5 billion in 2015-16. Apart from unconditional cash transfer, BISP is engaged in uplifting the human capital through its Waseela-e-Taleem (WeT) programme, which is one of the core elements of SDGs agenda. BISP has enrolled more than 1.3 million children in school. In 2015-16 the organization has shown significant improvement in payment mode by shifting from money order executed by the Pakistan Post to technology based payment mechanisms such as Debit Card which is highly transparent and ensures delivery of cash transfer to the well deserving beneficiary only. . BISP is going even a step further through introduction of biometric base withdrawals. BISP team is committed to the programme and its contribution in making the programme a success is highly appreciated.
