PROMOTION OF MOTHER LANGUAGES WOULD STRENGTHEN PAKISTAN : MARVI

Islamabad ( ) As language express one’s identity and represents ones’s social fabric, the promotion of mother languages would strengthen Pakistan by promoting harmony and unity within the country. The government is committed to promote languages of the soil and would welcome recommendations from this forum for the uplift of languages. Infact it was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who approved the same in PML-N manifesto 2013. This was stated by Minister of State and Chairperson BISP MNA Marvi Memon while speaking at concluding session of symposium on International Mother Language day.

The two day symposium was arranged by Pakistan Academy of Letters to formulate policy recommendations for the uplift of deprived languages of Pakistan. The symposium discussed the history & importance of mother tongues, their national language status, role in creating inter-provincial harmony and explored the measures to protect and promote mother tongues of the country.

The Chairperson added that as effective communication requires use of language well understood by the target audience so BISP is engaging writers from all districts to write short stories depicting the life of BISP beneficiaries. She asked the Chairman Pakistan Academy of Letters Prof Dr M Qasim Bughio to formulate an editorial board for the compilation of these stories in form of a book. The Chairperson stated that this book would be an asset for linguistics as this will be having stories in all  regional languages supplemented with translations in Urdu and english. The book would be distributed at the national and international forums, hence promoting mother languages. She stated that BISP would be presenting street theatres in all mother  languages across the country  as well.

The Chairperson appreciated the suggestions made by the linguistic experts and seconded the formation of Languages Commission of Pakistan. Chairman Pakistan Academy of Letters presented the proposals made by the participants and thanked the minister for gracing the occasion as chief guest.
